Hey there, and welcome back to the Feel Good Chiropractic And Wellness podcast. I’m Doctor Jesse Czajka, and I’m really glad you’re tuning in today. We’re based right here in Charlotte, North Carolina, and every week I try to bring you something practical — something you can actually use to feel better in your everyday life.

Today we’re talking about posture. And I know, I know — you’ve heard it before. “Stand up straight.” “Stop slouching.” Your mom probably said it a hundred times. But here’s the thing… posture is about so much more than just looking confident. It actually affects how you feel, how you move, and even how much energy you have throughout the day. So stick with me here, because this one really matters.

Let me start with why posture goes wrong in the first place. Most of us aren’t sitting at a desk all day because we want to — it’s just how modern life works. We’re on computers, we’re on our phones, we’re driving. And over time, our bodies adapt to those positions. The muscles in the front of your body get tight, and the muscles in the back get weak and overstretched. Your head starts to drift forward. Your shoulders round in. And before you know it, that position starts to feel normal — even when it’s not.

Here’s what’s interesting about that forward head posture specifically. For every inch your head moves forward in front of your shoulders, it effectively adds about ten extra pounds of stress on your neck and upper spine. Your head weighs roughly ten to twelve pounds normally. So if it’s sitting two or three inches forward — which is really common — your spine is working way harder than it should be. That’s why so many people end up with neck tension, headaches, and upper back tightness. It’s not a mystery. It’s mechanics.

Now, here’s the good news. Your posture is not fixed. It’s not permanent. It can absolutely improve — and it doesn’t require anything fancy.

The first thing I always recommend is awareness. Just start noticing where your head is sitting relative to your shoulders. When you’re at your desk, when you’re on your phone, when you’re watching TV. You don’t have to be perfect all day long. But checking in with yourself a few times a day makes a real difference over time.

The second thing is movement. One of the worst things you can do is stay in any single position for too long — even a good one. If you’re sitting at a desk, try to get up and move around at least once every hour. Roll your shoulders back, take a few deep breaths, do a gentle chin tuck. That little reset throughout the day adds up.

And the third thing — strengthen the muscles that support good posture. The muscles between your shoulder blades, your deep neck flexors, your core. These are the muscles that hold everything in place. Simple exercises like rows, wall angels, and core stabilization work can make a huge difference. You don’t need a gym membership. You just need consistency.

Now, when should you come see someone like me? If you’re already dealing with neck pain, upper back tension, headaches, or that nagging ache between your shoulder blades — that’s a good sign your spine needs some attention. Sometimes the joints in your neck and upper back get restricted and stiff, and no amount of stretching is going to fully fix that on its own. That’s where chiropractic care comes in. We can help restore proper movement to those joints, take the pressure off the surrounding tissues, and give you a real plan to keep things moving the right direction.

You don’t have to just live with discomfort. And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
